I’ve been in the market for something lightweight, comfortable, breathable, and with key armour points (back, chest, shoulders, elbows of course) for a good few months. Lots of options, lots of terrible knock-offs, lots of marketing terms thrown around with very little science to back it up. And that’s when I found myself looking at the Rukka option. I’ve considered Cordura/Kevlar shirts (quick pause for those that aren’t familiar: Cordura & Kevlar are Trademarks and both are born from Aramid fibers. See below for more details) and jackets, denim, leather, and the whole gamut of synthetics. Where one offers excellent armour it fails in abrasion resistance. Where another offers abrasion resistance it’s lacking in the armour department. For the few options where both meet together none would work in a hot climate due to an entire lack of breathability. Icon was a solid option and competitive with Rukka but looking closer you’ll notice their abrasion protection is solely on their armour points and designed to keep everything in place in a slide not to keep your skin intact in a slide. Knox was also a great alternative and a solid company. But didn’t fit my needs of versatility and hot weather capabilities alongside layering and shifts into colder climates. I know, I know I’m asking an awful lot from a single garment. And I’m not saying there aren’t other great options but for cost and capability the Rukka RPS protector shirt (aka protector jacket) is the best. I often ride in the mountains where temperatures swing from a roasting 38+ in the foothills and lowlands and suddenly drop to a chilly 8 or below in the course of riding for an hour or two. The next few days I may be on a more urbane route around town where the constant stop and go traffic combined with exhaust and heat emanating from the concrete becomes insufferable.
